Ajax Scroller v 1.7.1 not working

I had 1.5.3 installed, it was working fine, but I wanted to see new functionality of 1.7.1, so of course installed it. Using the same content and same parameters 1.7.1 fails. It loads the image, but no navigation buttons, and even if set to autoplay, nothing happens.
