The form seems to work fine but no inline messages, checks or error messages until after the Register Button

You have tons of JS errors. Mootools is not included. Make sure the template you are using is including the standard joomla head.
And get rid of JS errors, you have jQuery ones too...

thanks - I just used Google Ajax Library plugin and now all works fine
