I had posted on Joomla official issues tracker to request a new feature of "limit the characters used for username field when registering", the post is here:

Most users participated in that discusson had accepted this idea. Someone had already worked on it. Now there is a new plugin for it.
But I think that plugin is just to work with Joomla core, which does not offer AJAX validation. So the user will know he used forbidden characters in username ONLY after he submitted the form.
I hope you add a new feature to AJAX Register to validate this via AJAX so that user will know this right after he finished input of username and move on to next input box ( field focus changed).
