Is there anyway to use this component to allow a form of subcategory system? My client wants to have the photo albums to be categorized into 4 categories that then have albums under them. Is there any easy way to do this? Please let me know.

No, sorry. You can only have albums under a root directory, one level. Categories may come in future versions.
