When I try to access such link I get 404:
joomla.sakic.net/the-news/%20/

I noticed that you get a 404 only at the root, section, or category level. If you go to a page of content like:

joomla.sakic.net/the-news/latest-news/example-news-item-4/%20/

You do get a 200. As a matter of fact, you can put anything at the end and get a 200:

joomla.sakic.net/the-news/latest-news/ex...item-4/weradklnacoin
