make homepage URL clean (without the sef name of the article)

Hi,
when i visit my site, www.site.com , I get sent to my homepage at www.site.com/sef/name/of/homepage
What steps do i need to take to leave the address as www.site.com ?
I tried making an in sef, using /sef/name/of/homepage as the non sef url and / as the alias, but that resulted in a "redirect loop"

I read this in an old release notes from apr 2007 (old sef advance) :
"Enabled for empty alias for setting the homepage URL
When having some page other than the frontpage component for homepage, you can now enter an empty alias for that page to get a clean homepage URL"

I am using sef advance2008 version 1.1.2.

Make sure that the page you want to be the homepage is marked as default in main menu.

The article is starred as default in the main menu, and it is also listed on the "front page manager" of joomla.

Is there a trick to setting up the alias? maybe my htaccess file is causing the redirect loop when I try to make the alias?
