I use different layout for my categories and sections in Joomla 1.5. For example view=section&layout=cars.

How did you get that custom layout, is that something you hacked in the core?
Only the Joomla default layouts are supported, of course, list layout, blog layout etc.

That's no core hacking.
You just create layouts in your templates folder and choose them (change type) in the menu options.
