The URLs will change, yes. If you used unique URL setting old link for articles will still work but it's never recommended to change settings after your site has been indexed. Maybe you can just use manual alias for that URL and others where you want to skip strange characters.

It's not feature lack, title alias is meant to be without special chars, so the admin is clearing them on save.
